Summer Hazards – 5 Precautions for Your Hunting Dog

Posted by The SportDOG Staff

Summertime means extra fun in the sun, but it also means some new dangers. These tips will help make sure you and your mate stay safe out in the bush:

Increased Hydration – Warmer weather means increased risk of heat exhaustion for you and your dog. Even mild temperatures can be a threat if your pup isn't drinking enough water. Make sure you've always got cold water on hand for your dog and that they're drinking their fill. Your pet needs 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight each day.

Allergen Alert – For heaps of people, the first hint of spring means a blocked nose, scratchy eyes, sneezing, and the like. Did ya know these same allergies can hit your dog? The first sign of allergies in dogs is usually itchy skin, could be all over, or just in one spot. Other signs might be wheezing, coughing, or a runny mess from their eyes or nose. If you reckon your dog's got allergies, best see your vet. They'll sort out what's setting off your dog and help treat it.

Watch for New Dangers – With new growth may come new threats to your dog. Many wild plants can be toxic to your dog, if ingested. If you suspect your dog has come in contact with or ingested any plants it shouldn't have, contact your emergency vet straight away.

Adjust Outdoor Activity – Your dog might've loved spending heaps of time outdoors when it was cooler, but keep a close eye on your mate as the temperature goes up. Make sure you take more breaks for a drink and a rest when you're out bushwalking, training, hunting, or just having a play outdoors.

Stay in the shade – The direct light of the blazing sun can really knock you around if you're out in it for too long. Shaded spots can be up to 20 degrees cooler than direct sunlight. If you know your dog's gonna be in the sun for a fair while, make sure there's some shade for it to have a breather.

These simple safety measures will ensure you and your mate have a safe and healthy summer. What tips would you chuck on this list?
